How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles

well done, the music is absolutely wonderful... I can't get bored on each of them even though I've spent over 70hrs in this game

Octopath Traveler made me remember those good old times where i could enjoy a not-so-complicated Final Fantasy; i'm still playing OT1 and i am really enjoying it, and they say OT2 is even better...

You should totally have a look at the Octopath II transition tracks. All of the “For _____” pre-combat themes now actually use the character themes, just altered slightly. It’s super cool

octopath traveller is hyped beyond belief , it is not as good as reviewers said.. i got suckered to play this game and disappointed hard

Many people asked for a video about Octopath 2, I couldn't agree more. In fact, there is more in OT2 than in OT1 : the third boss music is mixed up with the pre-boss themes at some point which is clear madness. Maybe you could develop that ?

The music alone is almost enough to get me to play this game. Its almost a crime I haven't heard of it til now

My favorite JRPG of all times with chrono trigger

Not the first game to do this with music. I've played literally hundreds of JRPGs, so I can't recall off the top of my head, but something in the ps2 era did this. I will say that it's the first time I've seen it done in 3 parts, though. Typically it's been one track - that seamlessly hands off into another with the same tempo and a change in instrument. So many people don't realize how powerful this is in establishing all the elements of good story telling. Every effort made to push that tension a little higher pays off.

For octopath 2 , it gets even better. Even times the transition hyped me up

Olberic’s theme is “noble yet humble” because he knows of his importance, but now, he’s just a guy with a sword who doesn’t even know WHY he wields it. Also, is it just me, or does this buildup work more with “at journey’s end?” The song that plays for any traveler’s final boss.

The final boss that was unlocked after completing all the stories was the best of them all. The hardest too.

My heart rate goes up when I hear “For Revenge”. When that music plays, you know shit is about to get real and someone is about to die.

No wonder why i felt like the music transition was so smooth...

Another game track that puts a ton of effort into dynamic transitions is Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit, from Kirby and the Forgotten Land. There’s actually about a dozen possible transitions to account for any point at which you enter the second phase

I agree , but they've got another chance with octopath traveler 2! Which already looks so amazing and entertaining, it gives me goosebumps just thinking about the new epic fights that will ensue.

Coming back after they announced Octopath Traveler 2. I can't wait to see how they use the music to hype us up in the new game!

man I returned here after watching today's reveal of Octopath traveler 2 and Yasunori returning as composer. The OST in this game was by far the most memorable thing for me and it had such good tracks

I'm no where near done playing Octopath Traveler, but hands down is it a great game. I'm a bit ashamed that I never really got into it after getting a physical copy of it until recently. I think I got it from 2018 to 2020. Regardless, leaving a great RPG like Octopath Traveler alone for that long, makes me a bit sad.

Side note: why is the game the devs of Octopath made next called Triangle Strategy? I get it's probably another number pun, but at least Octopath Traveler rolls off as a game title easier than Triangle Strategy.

This speaks volumes because I originally made the decision to set out for this game for the sound track alone. I hope they continue this with future Square Enix titles.

this video was SO informative! i never even considered that the music had to react to the player's input--when you showed the first transition, my jaw dropped! great analysis. i wish you could have shown all 8 character's transitions, but i guess for some people that would have been repetitive. great vid!

i picked up the game on xobox gamepass and was just trying it out, then i got to the boss of my first chapter (Olberic) and when that music hit i went from being on the fence about the game to binging it for two days straight

By far, the greatest transition in the entire game for me was For Succor -> Decisive Battle II. The buildup is just menacing when it falls over into the boss them, and the transition just fits so perfectly that it feels so personal. Amazing score.

Criminally underrated video, criminally underrated game

Bravely default 2 has an awesome leadup song to its asterisk holder bosses.

But how does Octopath Traveller get away with the fact that Primrose's theme is a literal note for note copy from Sayaka Miki's theme in the anime, Puella Magi Madoka Magica?

Compare: "Conturbatio" and "Decretum" (Miki's themes) with Primrose's theme.

It's a great song. How did these two IPs agree to share it? People definitely noticed that they're the same song, yet it never seemed to generate a court showdown, or even any ill will between the companies. Neither of these were small IPs. Both earned tens of millions.

octopaths boss battles (esp decisive battle II) each time made me punch the bed out of pure hype and adrenaline!

the reason red dead 2 win is because its more realistic looking than octopath traveller's 2d3d pixel. i know its not related to OST at all but from what ive heard its because of that. they are ashamed if they put octotpath traveller 2d3d childish looking game as a winner on the big screen.

I might be mistaken, but I think that "Daughter of the dark god" and "The one they call the witch" also link into the transitions.
