The allied high command should have told Major General Charles DeGaulle(Commander of the Free French Army) that NO French Arab troops were to be used outside of Morrocco, Algeria, Tunesia or the French African possessions. Any Berber units that had been recruited should have been segregated from the rest of the units and kept in garrison until the end of the war when they should have been demobilized and discharged.This policy would have angered the French but it would have prevented the atrocities that occurred in Italy, France and Germany. General of the Army Eisenhower and Field Marshal Lord Alanbrook(Alan Brook) were to blame for not doing so. The allied high command should have followed a policy that any troops found to have committed atrocities or being discovered committing atrocities should have been summarily executed or executed after being convicted by court-marshal. The French were guilty of simply ignoring or even incouraging these atrocities as retaliation against the Germans and Italians who had conquered and humiliated France. When he was serving in India and Burma during WWII as a U S Army Corporal then Sergeant Telegrapher-Teletype Operator my Maternal Uncle witnessed the massacre of a large number of captured Japanese POWs by British Gurca troops who were guarding them on a POW train in 1944 or 1945. The Gurcas slit their throats and then threw them from the train. The Gurcas told people that this massacre was in retaliation for the Japanese massacre of Gurca POWs when the Japanese took Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong in 1942. This atrocity and many others committed by U S and allied troops in the European-Middle Eastern-North African and Asia-Pacific Theaters against enemy POWs and civilians were largely unreported and largely untried. The same was true of the execution of German SS troops(especially Concentration Camp personnel) by U S and allied military personnel in battle or when the camps were liberated. My Paternal Uncle witnessed the massacre of German SS troops by U S Army troops(including his Third Army unit) who liberated Dachau and assisted the British in the liberation of Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camps in 1945. The massacres were conducted by the troops themselves or in part by concentration camp inmate survivors. These crimes were largely unreported or reported with no action taken and evidence suppressed. There were rapes of female SS or other German/Austrian military and civilian government personnel by allied military personnel, mostly by French and Soviet units, which then usually killed them to conceal their crimes or had the female SS tried for their atrocities and then executed. The same thing occurred in the Asian-Pacific Theater when allied military units(including Chinese) fought against the Japanese, either in battle or during occupation of Japanese held areas(such as Manchuria or Taiwan then known as Formosa) as well as Japan proper. Some female SS or the female family members of Nazi and Italian war criminals became the mistresses of Soviet, British or American officers after having made a deal with them in order to avoid prosecution by release....some of them escaped or were placed in Displaced Persons Camps with the connivance of their lovers and either went to live in Western Europe, Canada or the United States. Some Japanese and Japanese allied women(Thais, Burmese, Indonesians, certain Indian collaborators) also became mistresses or wives of U S and allied military personnel(usually officers) and so either avoided prosecution or were permitted to immigrate. Much of the evidence of these atrocities were not released to the public until 10 years ago.
