I can agree on that to some point. Pvm wise it was a lot more fun but pvp it sucked everyone just used a zon/barb or sorc and sorc is the only one that could tele lol i had a lot of fun on classic just recenelty made a character last season on classic ladder it was fun but not enough people play it

I actually enjoy classic in the sense that you can’t be wasteful which in my opinion is it’s greatest quality. That small stash makes you consider what your keeping or muling. I like that. It helped reduce me from just keeping any and everything.

But we all know about the power creep and scope issues. I will again go on record that Sanctuary is still butter 🧈fked and in 26 years of development still not fixed. If any other company did that it would but nuts 😊

It really depends. The first couple of patches clearly improved D2 Classic. It was awful at start. But between 1.06 and 1.09 it was such an awesome experience, especially for pvp purposes, since the classes were fairly balanced and due to the plethora of rare dupes, most people had access to BiS gear and therefore those matches were a lot more skill intense. Plus a shitton of unforgettable moments like participating in the original gerbarb project. A lot of the bs that happened later on sort of ruined it. Like skill synergies totally flipping that balance. Lifeleech penalties, that stupid ww rework, removing the pierce from gruided arrow, "fixing" the fun interaction between blood golem and iron maiden and so on. Therefore my conclusion is: Some LoD QoL added , some nonsense being reverted, and Classic could definatly be the best D2R version. A lot of the stuff that came with the first patches after lod was just terrible decisions.

Pre-Expansion in D2R is not the version of the game as it was in patch 1.0. Spells still behave as they do on current version of the game. Chaos sanctuary is still the nerfed version with no Iron Maiden curse and weakened Diablo. It is basically the current version without features that came with expansion.

Honestly LoD totally fucked the game up. Its still fun, but everything became cookie cutter or "meta" builds after that. Before there were SOME builds that wrecked face, but those usually got nerfs along the way. Like static no longer hitting literally everything that had line of sight on you, and then being able to spam frozen orb. Or CE having such an insane AOE that it would obliterate 3-4 screens at a time.

It would be cool to see who was the most nerfed class. Highly subjective of course, but still would be an interesting thought experiment.

The title was a bit misleading but true otherwise.

There are roughly 3 eras of Classic:
2000-2001 the real Pre-Expansion Classic from version 1.0-1.06
2001-2003 The Expansion Classic 1.08-1.09
2003-> The Expansion 1.10 Classic

From these 3 the first one is of course my favourite. The 1.08-1.09 era coming behind as a second.
The last era is the worst. Synergies and monster HP alterations really messed things up for classic. Sure some builds do work even better than before but most others really got screwed.

If anyone is interested in 1.06 pre expansion gameplay I got some recording on my channel. Trying to document some of the funny things about the version from all classes and different builds.

I will say that classic is a completely different beast.

Woooooooot 2 legends. I do miss classic. You don't need strong mercs in classic lol. When they buffed the monsters then merc mains were justified.
