The tank would have been used as range targets by the Axis. Not a good tank.

General Patton proves my point, it's not the tank, it's the tactic!

(With the right tactics a Panzer VI could win over a modern tank, in duell or at platoon level)

I will say that, in War Thunder, the M2A2 is an underrated low-tier tank. It's a great early game tank that you can use to rush the objectives thanks to its high top speed and small size. It may only have machine guns for its weapons but when equipped with strictly armor-piercing rounds, it can prove devastating against other light tanks. I find it's best used as a hit-and-run harasser. The biggest problem aside from its low caliber weapon, is that its largest caliber weapon has a very limited firing arc so if an enemy comes up on the wrong side, you need to be able to maneuver and turn quickly to avoid getting taken out. It's got a good safe place in my Tier 1 US Loadout because of this.

Standardization versus need. Dropped idler, single turret with dedicated gunner, were moves in the right direction. Commander in a one man turret is wrong. Especially in a scout tank, where the commander's job is to establish and maintain situational awareness, which he can't do while manning a gun. Ask Ex General de Gaulle. He knew.

Training tank was the best use. Next best use would be as an indirect fire weapon carrier. M3 75mm howitzer carrier was already an existing design. Maybe make it an open top design like the m37 to reduce cost and potentially increase ammo capacity.

Training tank for sure.. Deploying it like a Bradley would not have been a successful option. Under powered and under gunned

i'll be honest sometimes I don't check in because I'm not usually a fan of the narration, but whoever this is, they did an amazing job, and if it's one of those robot voices, it's almost indistinguishable from just a really good narrator

Pool had 12 "confirmed" tank kills. What made up the rest of his claims were not tanks, some may not have been AFVs, and the bulk of his claims are unconfirmed. A serious historian should take up this research and compare his claims to the records of German units. As in the air, overclaiming was a real thing. He should get credit for what he actually did, which I'm sure was substantial, but likely hardly close to what was claimed.

I wonder if a turretless machine gun armed m2a3 would have made a good recce vehicle

It actually make sense to use two turrets in case of light infantry support vehicles as ambushes can be done from two sides at the same time. It was in fact original idea behind Russian Terminator, before it turn out into a joke. The main issue is that such vehicle itself is only moderately useful.

It's not noteworthy that in 1932 all the Us Army's tanks were either of WW1 vintage or some non-serious design. That was true of almost every army in the world at that time.

Deploying weapon systems overseas always comes down to logistics. The many variants would need many sets of spare parts and transportation. With how hungry the Marines got on Guadalcanal, 7.5 tons of extra flour would have been a better choice than an extra M2.

It is my understanding that some of the machine gun armed m2s were used by the Philippine forces in 1942. They had been sent there for training purposes before the war. How much combat they saw is difficult to ascertain.
