The Caledonian mountains saw extreme crustal shortening and thickening as shown by the highly folded and thrust-faulted rocks which form much of Scotland's Grampian and Western mountains. At the popular climbing crag of Poldubh in Glen Nevis you can see this in microcosm, with isoclinal folding and later quartz veins which have been stretched along an axis at right angles to the direction of shortening.
