I would disagree that they faced zero discrimination. They have their own set of struggles.

I grew up with hillbillies and know them well. Sowell makes the connection that many blacks were socialized by hillbillies or other low-income whites. They exhibit the same cultural norms. Not surprising their IQs would be similar.

There was racism against the mountain people of Appalachia and the Ozarks. Nobody cried about it, but they were not always treated fairly. They always have a stigma on them. Even cartoons about them, like Snuffy Smith. Mr sowell is not correct on this one.

In his 90’s and still very sharp. I never tire of listening to Thomas Sowell.

It's not correct to say that these people have not faced racism. The concept of race is a moving target, and did not mean 80 or 100 years ago, much less 250 years ago, what it means now. These people are largely Scots-Irish, and were certainly considered a racially distinct group previous to the 20th century, when they were brought into the fold of "white" in America. White supremacy started as Anglo-Norman Germanic supremacy, with all other "races" of European being some place below blond haired, blue eyed Nordic peoples, and that continued from Great Britain to early America. It effected distribution of resources, placement of peoples, taxation and law, public education and infrastructural development and so on well into the 20th century. Perhaps Black people see poor southern Celtic fringe people and wealthy New Englanders and just see "white", but historically, that is not how these people saw each other.
