Ah yes, 'the origins of the word puzzle is a puzzle', understood.

In Polish we have 'zagadka' and 'puzle'. Zagadka is when there's something riddle-like, 'puzle' is just the game where you connect a piece of carboard to another to make a picture

A jigsaw puzzle is generally considered a game, though it falls into a specific category of games. It is a puzzle game that involves assembling pieces to create a complete picture. Unlike many traditional games, it often lacks direct competition or defined "winners" and "losers" (unless done competitively), but it shares key elements of games such as:

Rules: Each piece has a specific place, and the challenge is to find and connect them correctly.
Goal: Complete the full image by assembling all pieces.
Engagement: It requires mental effort, pattern recognition, and sometimes collaboration.
While it leans more toward a recreational activity or a hobby, it fits the broader definition of a game.

Sounds like that rest stop is worth the trip! Now I know where to go on vacation.😃
Happy holidays to you guys, too. (I liked the 'thanks' vid well enough to share it with some folks - was a neat introduction to comparative linguistics!)

Games have rules so jigsaw puzzles are toys, not games

A puzzle is game-like in having a predetermined end point and in the sense of engagement you experience when you grapple with it. It is toy-like in that the conclusion has no utilitarian value and in the creativity you experience trying out strategies. Moving from the specific to the general (or repeated) we have hobbies and pastimes with some place in the taxonomy. So, were there toys/games among the Vikings? And are riddles - when part of literature - posed as game, toy, or something else?

Is a puzzle a game or a toy? It's a puzzling question, for certain.

It's a fun activity, My family did one today. It's very hard to define what is and isn't a game. I don't think of a puzzle as a game as I think there needs to be choice in a game. I don't count putting pieces together as making choices. Candyland is not a game in my book. There is not choice, just random events.

A tough question or riddle is a "poser". That sounds suspiciously close to "puzzle" and likewise takes some work to resolve.

Oddly I'd just wondered the etymology of puzzle a few days ago. Was hoping maybe it was obliquely related to 'pizzle'

Hm . From my 1912 Chambers Etymological Dictionary. From ME opposaile. E opposal. An objection or question put by an examiner. Fr opposer
No mention of any earlier language such as ON or OE. Would that mean 1066 and all that ? Entry by way of Norman French ?

I enjoy the French word for puzzle, the game: casse-tête or head-breaker.

I think puzzles are commercially categorized as toys, but to my mind the clear rules and victory conditions make it more game-like
