BELGRADE: WARLORD ARKAN SHOT & KILLED

Zeljko Raznatovic, the notorious Serb paramilitary leader better known as Arkan, was shot and killed Saturday in a Belgrade hotel.

A doctor at the hospital he was rushed to confirmed the suspected war criminal was dead.

The doctor at Belgrade's emergency hospital said he had seen Arkan shortly after he was rushed to the facility, and, "all vital functions had stopped."

Policemen and local media also said Arkan died, either en route of after arrival to hospital.

The doctor and police asked their names not be used.

Arkan, who was indicted by the U-N war crimes tribunal, was shot in the lobby of Belgrade's Hotel Intercontinental by a group of attackers, said witnesses who asked for anonymity.

Police at the scene said he was shot in the head and taken to hospital for emergency surgery.

One of his body guards, identified as Momcilo Mandic, was killed and another person also seriously injured.

The group was sitting in a sectioned-off part of the lobby when the assailants attacked.

A source said Arkan was hit by at least one round from a Heckler and Koch submachine gun that apparently entered his head through an eye.

Another source said three rounds hit Arkan in the attack, shortly after 5 p.m. (1600 GMT).

Arkan, 47, was indicted for war crimes in Bosnia in September 1997, but the indictment was kept under wraps
until the NATO air campaign in the Balkans began in March.
