Agreed. For me the purpose for exercise has always been mental health and nothing else. Long and short of it I feel better after a workout than I do after eating a doughnut

I totally agree that it is the net calorie intake that does the difference. If you just go lower than your basal metabolic rate (eat less than you consume) you loose fat/weight, it is that simple, no exercise needed. I can even say that aerobic training is making me eat more thus causing me to put on wight. I had to stop exercising for months because of my lower back pain, during these months I start eating less as well now I am a few kilograms lighter.

Mark, Very interesting and extremely well put together video as usual.... Every year I do the Concept2 Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve 200,000 metres challenge,(btw im English) it means rowing on a CONCEPT2 rower for about an hour a day, by the end of the month I haven't lost a pound, unscientific i know but I've been doing it for nearly ten year's with the same results..

I'm not able to decide wether that's a new mindset or a side-effect of mounjaro. The papers, I've read, say that you go back to old habits, when you stop taking the drug, and I've heard old habits die hard once in a lullaby.

People want a quick fix, you're so right, when my work colleagues ask me how to lose weight and build muscle ,the 1st thing they ask me is how long will it take and how much protein do i eat, they want to become an athlete straight away, you have to start at the beginning, its a process to try to make your life better and keep yourself out of the hospital. Iv never tracked my food, I look at what's going to help me throughout my day with my exercise 💪Love all your videos, you makeme laugh 😂
By the way im no athlete, im just pleased iv lost weight, can move more and im much happier 😊

bottom line modern-day society has food way too readily available to the public. if food were less accessible there probably would be less obese people in the world today.

I like the video Mark but I would disagree that exercise isn’t as important as diet. They are both equally important. Especially if you are just starting out on a weight loss journey. Once you achieve your level of fitness, diet becomes more important for maintaining weight.

Absolutely Love this perspective Mark! I have a history of disordered eating and my go to after a binge was excessive exercise. As part of my recent food addiction recovery journey where i lost 20 kg, I stopped considering exercise as a weightloss method and only use it to improve my physical abilities.

Separating the two is a super helpful piece of mindset (and practical) advice. On another note, I've noticed that my attitude to food changes when I fast once a week. The best explanation I have come across is that it teaches us to distinguish between feeling hungry (a bit subjective) and requiring food. Of course, this is a tip for the general population, not the super high-volume athlete.

Everyone is different though. I’ve cut calories in the past and lost no weight I’ve also exercised without changing my diet and lost no weight. The only thing that has ever worked for me is a combination of the two

Well, said Mark. Sounds like the jab is helping you keep your caloric intake below your BMR.

Excercising for the sake of increasing your daily caloric allowance is, as you point out, counterproductive in the long run.

Can of beans and two eggs probably do the same for less. Seriously though, if you are training hard - fuel is key and it isn't out run a bad diet, but run hard on a good diet - whatever that is.

I learned years ago that calories are all that matters. Exercising increases the amount of calories you can eat, but it also increases your appetite.

I don't agree with eat less, move more. Its more like, eat mostly whole foods, buld muscle move more. If you've got a good amount of muscle and youre doing a good bit of exercise, 7+ hours a week or so. Then it's quite hard to actually eat enough fruit, whole grains, vegetable and meat to get fat. Ever tried to force in 3,500-4,000cal of fruit, veg, whole grains and meat every day without fail? Its actually quite difficult and you quicky run into physichal limitations from the size of your gut and how much your intestines can hold without pain.
Where this changes is with the ice cream and cookies you so frquently mention binging on, its stupid easy to put away 3,000cal in a single sitting with those and get away with only feeling nauseous and sluggish. Go eat 3000cal of oatmeal and fruit in a sitting were now talking 10 servings of oats cooked in full cream milk and 11.5 cups of mixed berries. I dare you to find eating that much food easy 😂.

The problem isn't not enough movement or eating too much. The problem is any or all of no movement, having little muscle and using formulas synthesised in a lab as a food substitute.

The health service is totally struggling with so many people who don't need to be there with a little bit of self help , lifestyle and food choices . Then as you say pull in the exercise and gym to help out

Everyone is different. For me personally, running for about three hours a week causes small but consistent weight loss. Without any changes to my diet.
Not running that much and my weight goes up slowly.
But the point that diet matters a lot more than exercise I definitely agree with.

Exercise makes me feel great and keeps me fit but I don’t think it keeps the body fat levels down.

Hi Mark. Long term viewer and subscriber. Im not sure it gives me the right to critique your choices but where you are makes me itchy. You have gone from "above average" and entirely admirable to medication and sub mediocrity... You are a hugely persuasive and eloquent guy, you can formulate and present a cogent argument for whatever extreme course you choose. Just police yourself in this Brother because cogent and persuasive is not always right. I preferred Above Average and I have always been astonished by your achievements. Good luck to you.

Mark worth mentioning maybe to people that are overweight and taking up training the best way to lose fat is to drop carbs rather than calorie count- it’s just easier and gets faster results which helps move off the first rung 🤷‍♂️ love the content and the new pad
Ps
I’d go for garden room office and leave the gym in the barn 😵‍💫🤗

I very much dislike being hungry, so my favourite way to lose weight is to exercise a lot. However it is very time consuming. You need a lot of free time to burn 5000kcal per day.

Been a subscriber since the early days and not sure how you consistently provide this level of outstanding content. Without much thought I've been doing the exact same thing for a few weeks and amazingly the weigh is starting to drop off. I'm a huge cyclist who used to feel the need to 'carb up' before a ride and afterwards treat myself to whatever was in the pantry. Let's first jettison the visceral fat before focusing on eating like a TDF rider.....

Great video as always,
Started getting into running about 3 years ago, and actually find it harder to control my bodyweight since training for marathon distance+

Long runs over 2 hours seem to make me uncontrollably hungry for about 2 days!

Not sure how much of it is in my head but it means I've actually put weight on whilst training more, and then after the race it's a nightmare winding down the amount of food i need.
